Communication Model Exercise

COMMUNICATION MODEL EXERCISE

Good communication can be summarized in one formula:  Intent  =  Impact

This exercise will assist the participants in understanding where their strengths are, and where there are opportunities for improvement.  Most importantly, this exercise allows participants to practice unfamiliar skills in a safe and non-judgmental setting.

Exercise Setup:

  • All exercises will be conducted in groups of three (triplets).
  • Ask one person in each triplet to accept the role of the speaker, the listener, and the observer.
  • Ask all participants to think of a subject that is easy to talk about, such as a hobby, a new event, a recent adventure, a good book, etc.

Exercise 1 – For the Speaker:

  1. Ask the speaker to talk about anything they like for three (3) minutes.
  2. Ask the listener to be present for the speaker and listen intently, but not to interrupt.
  3. Ask the observer to make notes regarding the speaking skills of the speaker.
  4. At the conclusion of the three (3) minutes, ask the observer to debrief what they observed in the speaker.
  5. Switch roles in the triplet, so the listener becomes the speaker, the observer becomes the listener, and the speaker becomes the observer.
  6. Repeat the exercise as often as desired.

Exercise 2 – For the Listener:

  1. Ask the speaker to talk about anything they like for three (3) minutes.
  2. Ask the listener to be present for the speaker and listen intently, and this time give feedback.
  3. Ask the observer to make notes regarding the feedback skills of the listener.
  4. At the conclusion of the three (3) minutes, ask the observer to debrief what they observed in the listener.
  5. Switch roles in the triplet, so the listener becomes the speaker, the observer becomes the listener, and the speaker becomes the observer.
  6. Repeat the exercise as often as desired.
